The Cape Breton Senior Hockey League, like other leagues in Canada, suffered from a shortage of players in World War II. In 1942-43 this was very serious. Fortunately there were a large number of military personnel assigned to the area as part of the Battle of the Atlantic which was literally being fought around the island.
Three teams of military people from the three branches were set up and they replaced the civilian teams of past years. The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) team was assigned to Glace Bay.
Despite finishing in third and last place, Glace Bay RCAF won the playoffs. They lost the regional quarter final.
This was the only year that this format was used.
