Playing career[]
MacDonald lettered in soccer, lacrosse and ice hockey while at Irondale high school. She was captain of the lacrosse team as a senior and captain of the ice hockey team as a junior and senior. As a senior, she was named all-state hockey player by three different outlets. In addition, she was an all-metro first team and All-North Suburban Conference. She was the Irondale Most Valuable Player in 2007 and ’08. She helped Irondale to two Section 5 championships and two North Suburban championships. In her senior year, she was a conference and state scoring leader as a senior. She also received the Irondale Distinguished Academic Achievement Awards in soccer, hockey and lacrosse.

MacDonald played for the U.S. national select team in 2008.
NCAA[]
On January 22, 2011, in front of a crowd of prominent alumnae and Harvard Olympians, the women's hockey team collected its fourth consecutive win. The Crimson defeated Union by a 4-0 tally at Bright Hockey Center.[1] Gina McDonald netted her first collegiate goal in the game.

Personal[]
At Irondale high school, she won a Knights Award for lacrosse and was a two-time all-conference lacrosse player. Her sister, Anna McDonald played three seasons for the Crimson women’s hockey team from 2007-10.[2] Her uncles, Bob and Steve Arndt, along with her cousin, Jaime Arndt, played hockey for Dartmouth. Her cousin, Sam Cornelius, played hockey for Notre Dame.
