He played for the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers and Montreal Maroons. He won the Stanley Cup with the Montreal Canadiens in 1930.

After playing junior and senior hockey in Ontario, he turned pro with the Philadelphia Arrows in 1927-28. Carson was signed as a free agent with the Montreal Canadiens in 1928. He was loaned to the New York Rangers halfway through that season but still ended up with no points. He went back to the Canadiens in 1929-30 and helped them win the Stanley Cup.

The Canadiens sent him down to the Providence Reds for two seasons and brought him back in 1932-33. In 1935 he suffered a severe injury and sat out the 1935-36 season. The Habs traded him to the Montreal Maroons where he played the 1936-37 season and then retired.
