He was selected by the Flyers in the first round, 22nd overall, in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.[1]
Club career[]
Rubtsov played junior hockey with the Vityaz Podolsk organisation. He made his MHL debut playing 11 regular season games and 1 play-off game with the Russkie Vityazi Chekhov during the 2014-15 season while also playing 9 games with the under-17 team of the Vityaz Podolsk. Rubtsov made his senior debut during the 2016-17 season playing 15 games with the Vityaz Podolsk of the KHL. He also played 15 games with the Russkie Vityazi Chekhov of the MHL before heading to North America where he finished the season with 16 games played with the Chicoutimi Saguenéens of the QMJHL.
He signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Philadelphia Flyers of the NHL on March 2, 2017.[3] He continued with the Saguenéens in the 2017-18 season but after 11 games played with the Saguenéens Rubtsov moved to the Acadie-Bathurst Titan of the QMJHL. He finished there the season with 38 regular season games and 19 play-off games played and became the QMJHL champion and the CHL Memorial Cup champion.§
In the 2018-19 season, Rubtsov played with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the AHL.
During the 2019–20 season, Rubtsov made his NHL debut with the Flyers on November 1, 2019.[4] He appeared in four games with the Flyers, going scoreless, before returning to the AHL with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Rubtsov collected just 2 goals and 13 points in 42 regular season games with the Phantoms before the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Rubtsov was initially named to Flyers Return to Play squad to participate in training camp in preparation for the playoffs. He was left off the final roster and on August 23, 2020, he was loaned to Russian club, the HK Sochi of the KHL, until the commencement of the delayed 2020–21 North American season.[5]
