Gene Sobchuk

Eugene Sobchuk (born February 19, 1951 in Lang, Saskatchewan) was a retired professional ice hockey player who played one game in the National Hockey League. He would play with the Vancouver Canucks. He would also play 81 games in the World Hockey Association with the Phoenix Roadrunners and Cincinnati Stingers.

He played junior hockey for the Weyburn Red Wings (1968–1970) and the Regina Pats (1970–71). The New York Rangers chose him 109th overall in the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft.

Sobchuk turned pro with the Des Moines Oak Leafs in 1971-72. In 1973 the Vancouver Canucks accquired him through the waiver draft. He played one game (his only NHL game) with the Canucks in 1973-74.

In 1974-75 he played three games for the Phoenix Roadrunners of the World Hockey Association (WHA), scoring a goal. He returned to the WHA the follwoing season, scoring 23 goals and 19 assists with the Cincinnati Stingers.

After two years in the minors, Sobchuk retired in 1978.

He is the older brother of Dennis Sobchuk.

Sobchuk was the head coach of the junior Weyburn Red Wings in 1979-80 and 1980-81.
