Eugene Edward Achtymichuk (born September 7, 1932 in Lamont, Alberta) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey centre in the National Hockey League.
Playing career[]
Gene Achtymichuk played a total of 32 NHL games spanned over almost a decade. He began his career by playing one game for the Montreal Canadiens in 1951–52 as an emergency callup from the juniors. Five years later, in 1956–57, he played another three games for the Canadiens. The following season saw Gene achieve a career high 16 games played. This is also the season that he scored all of his three career goals and eight career points. The next season, his last NHL season, he played 12 games for the Detroit Red Wings.
He played junior hockey for the Edmonton Canadians and the Crows Nest Pass Coalers. He turned pro with the Buffalo Bisons in 1952-53. In between callups to the Canadiens, Gene played for the Victoria Cougars, Quebec Aces, and the Montreal Royals.
In 1958 he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings and saw some action in 1958-59. After that he was relegated to the minor pros.
He was the player-coach of the Long Island Ducks in 1967-68. In 1968-69 and 1971-72 Gene was the haed coach of the senior Edmonton Monarchs. His last coaching stint was with the junior Fort Saskatchewan Traders of the Alberta Junior Hockey League in 1976-77.
He retired as an active player in 1970.
