The Fernie Memorial Arena is an indoor arena located in Fernie, British Columbia. The arena is home to the Fernie Ghostriders of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League.
Tragedy at Arena[]
Three people were killed due to what was later identified as exposure to ammonia at the Fernie Memorial Arena October 17, 2017. The arena was closed for the day as the crews were completing emergency repairs to the refrigeration plant at the rink. The leak lead to at least 50 people requiring medical treatment and led local officials to evacuate the local area due to the ammonia leak and high winds in the area.[1] The arena would re-open three months later. [2] The Ghostriders would play most of their games in the Elk Valley Leisure Centre in Sparwood
