Eddie Wares
Edward George "Eddie" Wares (born March 19, 1915 in Calgary, Alberta - February 29, 1992) was a professional ice hockey right wing who played 321 games in the National Hockey League. He was with the New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, and Chicago Black Hawks. He won the Stanley Cup in 1943 with the Detroit Red Wings.
He started out in junior with the Calgary Jimmies from 1932 to 1934 and then with the senior Calgary Bronks in the 1934-35 season. The Montreal Maroons signed him as a free agent in Septemeber, 1935, but traded him to the New York Rangers a month later.
Wares played three seasons with the Rangers' farm team the Philadelphia Ramblers, getting his NHL debut with 2 games in 1936-37. He was traded to the Detroit Red Wings in the middle of the 1937-38 season.
He was a regular with the Wings through the 1942-43 season, winning the Stanley Cup in that last year. World War II regulations kept him in Canada in 1943-44 and 1944–45, when he played senior hockey.
In 1945 he was sold to the Chicago Black Hawks and played two seasons for them. After that it was back to the minor pros. Wares finished his playing career with three seasons for the senior Nelson Maple Leafs before retiring in 1953.
He was a player-coach of the Victoria Cougars in 1949-50 and of the Nelson Maple Leafs in 1951-52. Later on he coached the junior Moose Jaw Canucks for part of the 1959-60 season.
In the NHL Wares played in 321 regular season games, scoring 60 goals and 102 assists. In the playoffs, he played in 45 games with 5 goals and 7 assists.
