The EHC Vienna Flyers were an Austrian women's ice hockey team from Vienna, which was founded in 1998 and played in the Austrian Women's League until 2012. The Flyers played their home games in the Albert-Schultz-Halle. The biggest success of the club's history was winning the Austrian Championship in the 2000/01 season. Furthermore, the Flyers won the runner-up title four times (1998/99, 1999/2000, 2001/02 and 2008/09).
History[]
The EHC Vienna Flyers Wien was founded in the spring of 1998 by Alexandra Sumper and Gudrun Thaller. The name "Flyers" is derived from the organizational foundation of the new club by the operating teams of AUA and Lauda Air.
In the following season, the women's team took part in the Austria-wide Women's League Championship under the name “EHC Vienna Flyers – the Mighties” and became runner-up behind the Villach Lady Hawks. One year later, this placement was repeated and in 2001 the first and only Austrian championship was reached. Since 2004, there has been an international elite league, the Elite Women's Hockey League, where the women competed. In the 2008–09 season, the Flyers, together with the EHV Sabres Vienna, competed in Sabres/Flyers United in the EWHL and the state championship. At the end of the 2011/12 season, the Flyers were closed and a large part of the players switched to the Wiener Eislöwen-Verein.
