The Dryden Ice Dogs are a Tier II Junior "A" ice hockey club based out of the town of Dryden, Ontario. The team is a member of the Superior International Junior Hockey League.
History[]
An original member of the SIJHL, the Ice Dogs came into existence after the folding of the legendary Thunder Bay Flyers. Despite a lack of statistical information for the 2001-02 season, it is known that the Ice Dogs were the SIJHL first ever league champion. It is also known, despite a lack information for the Dudley Hewitt Cup championship, that the Ice Dogs have never competed for the National title, the Royal Bank Cup.
In 2005-06, the Ice Dogs finished in second place in both the regular season and playoffs to a close-to-unblemished Fort William North Stars. The Ice Dogs and North Stars met in the league finals, but the Dogs were swept in four games by the North Stars. The North Stars were the host of the 2006 Dudley Hewitt Cup, so just by making the finals the Ice Dogs earned their second trip to the Dudley. The Ice Dogs played inspired hockey and upset (and through a tie breaker eventually eliminated) the tournament favourite St. Michael's Buzzers (of the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League) by a score of 3-2 -- outshot 40-19. The next game saw them get brought back down to earth with a 6-2 loss to the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League champion Sudbury Jr. Wolves. The final game of the round robin saw them lose for the fifth straight time in the playoffs to the Fort William North Stars by a score of 3-0. In the semi-final, the Ice Dogs again met face-to-face with the NOJHL champions, the Wolves, and despite leading the game 4-2 in the third period, they allowed 3 quick goals at the end of the game to finish their season.
