Selected by Minnesota North Stars 1st round (#6) in 1974 NHL Amateur Draft

He was picked by the Edmonton Oilers in the 1979 NHL Expansion Draft and was traded to the Washington Capitals two and a half seasons later.
Hicks retired in 1983 and became the coach of the St. Albert Saints of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. But he missed playing, and went to Europe to play until 1988 when he finally did retire.
