The Don Ashby Memorial Trophy was awarded to the Central Hockey League player whose impressive performances during the season did not correspond to any of the usual award categories and therefore did not receive the appropriate recognition.
The award was named after Don Ashby starting with the 1981-82 season. Ashby died in a traffic accident in May 1981 after his Wichita Wind team's final championship game.
