He played Tier II Junior "A" for the Sherwood Park Crusaders in 1980-81 and then major junior hockey for the Regina Pats and the Prince Albert Raiders from 1981 to 1985. Goertz won the Memorial Cup with the Raiders in 1985 and was named to the tournament's all-star team.
The Pittsburgh Penguins chose him 223rd overall in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. Goertz turned pro in 1985-86 with the Baltimore Skipjacks, a Penguins' farm team. In 1986-87 he moved to the Muskegon Lumberjacks, another farm team. He played two games for the Penguins in 1987-88 and returned to Muskegon until his retirement in 1991.
