The city briefly was home to the San Jose Sharks when they started play in the NHL while, from 1991 to 1993 their full time home was being built. The arena was also home to the San Francisco Seals when they played in the Western Hockey League. The arena also hosted the San Francisco Shamrocks of the Pacific Hockey League and the San Francisco Spiders of the International Hockey League. The San Francisco Bulls of the ECHL also played in the arena.

The California Seals of the NHL was planning on using the arena while an arena was built in San Francisco but that arena would not come to fruition and the team would be based out of the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum but the team would never draw as well as the Seals had while in the WHL.  The Seals would go through three sales and four names prior to relocating to Cleveland in 1976.  A new arena in San Francisco would not be built until 2019 when the Chase Center opened for the Golden State Warriors.  The new arena was built specifically for basketball.
