Cory Murphy (born on February 13, 1978 in Kanata) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman, currently the assistant coach of the Rögle BK of the SHL.
Club career[]
Murphy began his junior career with the Kanata Valley Lasers of the CJHL in the 1994-95 season. He spent there 3 seasons. In the 1996-97 season, he became the CJHL champion and the Fred Page Cup champion.
In 1997 - 2001, Murphy played collegiate hockey with Colgate University of the NCAA. In the 1997-98 season, he was selected into the NCAA (ECAC) All-Rookie Team. In the 1999-00 season, he made it into the NCAA (ECAC) First All-Star Team and in the 2000-01 season into the NCAA (ECAC) Second All-Star Team.
Murphy then played four seasons in the SM-liiga, two with the Blues, two with the Ilves. In the 2003-04 season, he was the defenceman who recorded most assists (26) and most points (44) in the SM-liiga and made it into the SM-liiga All-Star Team.
In the 2005-06 season played Murphy with the HC Fribourg-Gottéron of the NLA.
In the 2006-07 played Murphy with the HIFK of the SM-liiga. In this season, he was awarded Kultainen kypärä for best player in the league, as well as Lasse Oksanen Award for the best player of the season during regular season play and Pekka Rautakallio Award for best defenceman of the season. He made it into the SM-liiga All-Star Team as he was the defenceman who recorded most assists (37) and points (50) in the SM-liiga.
On March 27, 2007, Murphy signed a two-year NHL contract with the Florida Panthers. Murphy's first NHL goal was scored October 6, 2007 against Kevin Weekes of the New Jersey Devils.
In the 2008–09 season, Murphy played seven games with the Florida Panthers of the NHL whilst bothered by a re-occurring shoulder injury. Murphy was sent to the AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans, for a two-week conditioning stint before being recalled by the Panthers on January 15, 2009. He played 5 games with the Americans. Murphy was subsequently claimed off re-entry waivers by the Tampa Bay Lightning of the NHL on January 19, 2009. He played 25 games with the Tampa Bay Lightning of the NHL.
On July 17, 2009, he was signed by the New Jersey Devils of the NHL to a two-way contract.
After the 2009-10 season in which he played 12 games with the New Jersey Devils of the NHL and 64 regular season games and 5 play-off games with the Lowell Devils of the AHL, he moved in Europe. In 2010 - 2012, Murphy played in the NLA with the ZSC Lions. Then he played one season with the Dynamo Minsk of the KHL. Since 2013, he played in the SHL. In 2013 - 2017, he played with the Växjö Lakers HC. In the 2014-15 season, he became the SHL champion and also the SHL Defenceman of the Year as he was the defenceman who scored most assists (30) and most points (39) in the SHL.
Then he played his last season with the Karlskrona HK of the SHL.
International career[]
Murphy played with the Canadian National Team at the 2007 World Championship (winning there gold).
As the coach, he represented German National Team at the 2019 World Championship.
