The Thunder Bay Amateur Hockey Association (TBAHA) was the governing body for the northwestern portion of the province of Ontario  It was formed in 1915 and became a member of what is now Hockey Canada in 1918.  The area governed by the TBAHA greatly expanded in 1970 to cover just about of everything west of the 85th meridian. The organization's name was changed to Hockey Northwestern Ontario (HNO) in 1999 to better reflect the geographical area it served. The association is responsible for controlling all hockey not controlled by the Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) or the Hockey Eastern Ontario (HEO) in Ontario. TBAHA supported a variety of Junior and Senior leagues, including: the Thunder Bay Junior A Hockey League, Thunder Bay Senior Hockey League, North Shore Intermediate Hockey League, Northwestern Ontario Junior Hockey League, and the Thunder Bay Junior B Hockey League, among others. Due to the remoteness of the region from the other population centres of Ontario the teams in the region often played in Manitoba-based leagues or leagues based out of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.  Several seasons the region's teams would play in the Manitoba Senior playoffs.
