This level is what was classified as Junior A until junior hockey was reclassified following the 1969-70 season. Until then this level was eligible for the Memorial Cup and competed in the Quebec Junior Playoffs and the Eastern Canada Memorial Cup Playoffs.

The Montreal Junior Canadiens are noteworthy at this level because in the late 1950's the organization (with several relocations) competed as an independent team for several years before joining the Ontario Hockey Association's Junior A league in 1961 and would remain in that league until a lawsuit was brought forward to force the organization to play in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League joining the QMJHL as the Montreal Bleu Blanc Rouge for the 1972-73 season. The Junior Canadiens would win three Memorial Cups during their existence.

This level of play was succeeded by the Major Junior classification and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League has been the only league at this level to represent Quebec since then.
