The Cape Breton Regional Municipality is a regional municipality created on August 1, 1995. As of the 2016 Census the population of the municipality was 94,285. The community was created through the amalgamation of all of the communities in Cape Breton County on eastern Cape Breton Island.

The municipalities from which the CBRM was created included the Municipality of the County of Cape Breton, the City of Sydney, the Towns of Glace Bay, Sydney Mines, New Waterford, North Sydney, Dominion and Louisbourg.
