The Canton Kangaroos are a men's hockey team representing the State University of New York of Technology at Canton. The school is located in Canton, New York. Both teams play out of the SUNY Canton Athletic and Recreation Center, the "CARC". which was completed in 2011.
Team nickname[]
The school chose the nickname Kangaroos in 2006 when the school was reclassified as a four year college. The unusual nickname was chosen with the logic that a Kangaroo can't go backwards they only move forward and are aggressive animals and congregate in mobs and are able to adapt to situations
The nickname is shortened to the "Roos".
Arena[]
The SUNY Canton Athletic and Recreation Center also known as "The CARC" or "Roos House" opened in June of 2011. The rink was only part of the state of the art facility which also included a field house, fitness center, and swimming pool.
Men's Program[]
The program dates back to 1966 as a club level team. They played a hydrid ACHA/NCAA schedule for 2012-13. It was elevated to full varsity status with the 2013-14 season. The men's program became a Division III Independent for the 2012-13 season. The team has remained an independent as of the 2016-17 season. The team is eventually hoping to end up in the State University of New York Athletic Conference but no confirmation of a start date has been announced. The team had applied for membership for the 2016-17 season and was denied but the team played each of the members of the conference twice but not home and home as the league does for normal conference play.
As part of the May 12, 2023 announcement of the formation of a Women's State University of New York Athletic Conference for the 2023-24 season it is also announced that the Canton Kangaroos men's ice hockey tame will join the men's conference with the 2024-25 season.[1]
