Brock badgers large

"Badgers" is the name of the sports teams of Brock University, located in St. Catharines, Ontario. They are members of Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and U Sports (formerly known as CIS).

History[]

The Brock Badgers hockey team started in the Ontario Intercollegiate Athletic Association (OIAA) in 1967-68 and remained there until the conference ended in 1970-71. In 1971-72 they joined the Ontario Universities Athletic Association (OUAA) once the Ontario and Quebec conferences were re-organized along provincial lines.

Prior to 1981 the team had played out of the Jack Gatecliff Arena. In 1981 the team moved to the Thorold Arena and stayed there for 25 years until the opening of the Seymour-Hannah Sports & Entertainment Centre in 2006.

The team would make history when it named Michael Nicholson as the team's captain for the 1968-69 season. This would mark the first time that a Canadian university team would be captained by a black player.[1] This event would happen ten years after Willie O'Ree broke the colour barrier in the National Hockey League.
