During its first year of official operation (2005–2006), the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League consisted of teams from Trinity Western University, Simon Fraser University, University of Victoria, University of Northern British Columbia and University of the Fraser Valley. One season later (2006–2007), Selkirk College replaced University of Northern British Columbia; however, it was rumored that University of Northern British Columbia may rejoin the league for the 2008-2009 season. In the 2009-2010 season the BCIHL expanded to 7 teams with the addition of the Okanagan College Crusaders and Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack.

Each team plays each other throughout the season four times, twice at home and twice on the road for a total of 24 regular season games. At the conclusion of the regular season, which is generally the second weekend of every March, a tournament is held at Trinity Western University's home rink, the Langley Event Centre in Langley, British Columbia, where the top four teams in league standings (and the host team if they are lower in the standings) play in a round robin tournament.

The league comprises players with various hockey backgrounds. Comparatively, the BCIHL is of Junior B to Junior A calibre while the number of players with Major Junior experience is small.
