He played for the University of Michigan and was chosen by the Winnipeg Jets 156th overall in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. He played for the United States national team in 1987-88 and then turned pro with the Jets.
Jones played part-time for the Jets until he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings for Phil Sykes in December, 1989. He played the 1990-91 season for the Kings. In 1991 he signed as a free agent with the Philadelphia Flyers and played 48 games in 1991-92. That was the extent of his NHL career.
He played a total of 148 NHL regular season games, scoring 25 goals and 56 points.
