He played junior hockey for the Niagara Falls Flyers from 1964 to 1966. While still a junior, he was called up to the Bruins to replace the injured Ed Johnston in October, 1965. He also played one game for the Springfield Indians that season.

In 1966-67, Ring went to Acadia University and played there until 1970.
