The Baton Rouge Zydeco are a minor professional ice hockey team located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and play in the Federal Prospects Hockey League. Their home games are played at Raising Cane's River Center Arena.

Origins[]

Baton Rogue had been without minor league hockey since the Baton Rouge Kingfish went dormant for the 2002-03 season and were then the franchise rights were relocated to Victoria, British Columbia after the 2003-04 ECHL season.

In late 2022 and early, the Federal Prospects Hockey League's (FPHL) Mississippi Sea Wolves hosted three exhibition games in the Raising Cane's River Center Arena with the Carolina Thunderbirds and the Port Huron Prowlers, drawing a little over 7,000 fans for each game.[1][2]

In April of 2023 an expansion team to be based out of the Raising Cane's River Center Arena in Baton Rouge, Louisiana is to be added to the league for the 2023-24 season without any formal announcement from the league.[3] A formal announcement was made on April 11, 2023.[4] On July 13th the announcement was made that the team will be called the Baton Rouge Zydeco.[5] The name Zydeco refers to a music genre native to Louisiana originating with French Creole speakers and blends the elements of Cajun, Creole, country, blues, rythhm and blues, and indigenous music of the region which originated in the early 20th century.
