Al Douglas Hill (born April 22, 1955) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey centre who played eight seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Philadelphia Flyers.
Playing career[]
Hill started his NHL career with the Philadelphia Flyers in 1977. He would spend his entire career with the Flyers. He retired from hockey after the 1988–89 AHL season.
He played junior hockey for the Victoria Cougars. Undrafted by any NHL team, he was signed as a free agent by the Flyers in 1976.
On February 14, 1977, Hill made his NHL debut for the Flyers. On that night, he tallied two goals and three assists for five points. His performance set a new record for most points by a player in his first NHL game (a 6-4 Philadelphia victory over the St. Louis Blues).
He was a regular for the Flyers through the 1981-82. After that the bulk of his time was spent with the Hershey Bears.
After retiring in 1989 Hill immediately turned to coach. He was an assistant coach with the Hershey Bears (1989–90), the Binghamton Rangers (1991 to 1993), and the New York Rangers (1993–94). From 1993 to 1995 he was the head coach of the Binghamton Rangers, followed by assistant coach of the Cincinnati Cyclones from 1995 to 1997. He was the head coach of the B.C. Icemen in 1997-98.
