This is the 2024 Mowat Cup, the Junior A ice hockey Provincial Championship for British Columbia. This would marked the 58th time the tournament had been scheduled as the Cyclone Taylor Cup. But, when BC Hockey elevated the three Junior B level leagues in the province to the Junior A level as a response to the previously Junior A level British Columbia Hockey League leaving the sanctioning of BC Hockey and Hockey Canada, the tournament name was changed. The tournament is hosted by the Kimberley Dynamiters of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. The event held at the Kimberley Civic Centre in Kimberley, British Columbia.[1]
Traditionally, the three league champions of British Columbia's Junior B leagues and the host team will meet in a single round robin tournament with the first and second place teams from the round robin meeting in the championship game. This format is retained when the leagues are elevated to Junior A
The previous version of the provincial Junior A championship was the Mowat Cup, which had become redundant to the BCHL's Page Cup as the BCHL was the only league eligible to compete at the Junior A level. As a result of the BCHL withdrawing from the authority of BC Hockey the three leagues would compete for the provincial Junior A championship. On March 7, 2024 BC Hockey announced that they competition would be for the Mowat Cup.[2]
