This is the 2023-24 Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League season. This is the league's 17th season.
Membership Changes[]
- On September 29, 2022 the Almaguin Spartans announced they would be taking a leave of absence for the 2022-23 season due to immigration issues with 17 players from Belarus and Russia.[1] The team had previously announced they would relocate to the Sundridge Strong Joly Arena in Sundridge which was intended to be their original home when they joined the league in 2014. The team would return to the league for the 2023-24 season
- On January 20, 2023 the league announced the addition of the Le Bécard de Senneterre who had last played in the Canadian Premier Junior Hockey League. The team last played during the 2019-20 season which was ended prematurely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The team will be based out of the Centre sportif André-Dubé in Senneterre, Quebec in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region near Rouyn-Noranda and Val-d'Or.[2]
- On May 1, 2023 the league announced the "mandatory leave of absence" for the South Muskoka Shield. The team will be in operational dormancy until February 1, 2024 with the owner given until that date to sell the franchise rights.[3] Part of the reason for the move appears to be that the owner is facing possible assault charges from an incident at a league game and several other business practices have been called into question.[4][5]
- On May 28, 2023 the league announced that it decided to cease all GMHL team operations within its' Western Division.[6] This action terminated all ten of the teams in the Western Divsion. One team had already folded during the season (Tumbler Ridge Steel Kings) and apparently the Slave Lake Icedogs folded after completion of the season as they were not part of the new league announcement on May 29th[7][8] after the newly formed National Junior Hockey League (Canada) was first announced on May 26th.[9]
- The Streetsville Flyers would change their name to the Toronto Flyers prior to the 2023-24 season.[10] The team relocated from the Vic Johnston Community Centre in Mississauga to the Parmount Thornhill Arena in Thornhill for 2022-23.
- The New Tecumseth Civics planned to return to the league after sitting out the 2022-23 season but would end up sitting out the 2023-24 season as well.
- The Tottenham Thunder are renamed the Tottenham Railers.
- On September 20, 2023 the league president announced that the Windsor Aces would be taking a leave [11] Windsor had already lost a September 16th game 12-2 to the Tottenham Railers and a September 17th game to the St. George Ravens 8-1.
- The Bancroft Rockhounds announced on their facebook page that they were taking a leave of absence for the 2023-24 season on September 29th.[12]
- The Tottenham Railers would end up moving their home games to the Ray Twinney Complex in Newmarket as they were unable to secure regular ice time at the Tottenham and Community Fitness Centre as the other arena in town the Beeton Arena was closed due to structural issues[13]
- On January 15, 2024 the league announced the addition of the Richmond Hill Rampage to the league for the 2024-25 season. The team will be based out of the Elvis Stojko Arena.[14]
- On January 25, 2024 the town of Wasaga Beach announced the community was getting a team in the league for the 2024-25 season to be based out of the Wasaga Stars Arena. The team will be owned by the owner of the Bradford Bulls[15] The announcement would be confirmed by the league on January 29th.[16] The team will be known as the Wasaga River Dragons.[17]
- On March 4, 2024 the league announced the addition of the Ottawa Valley Wolves to the league for 2024-25 season. The team is based out of the Bell Sensplex in Ottawa.
