Alberta Provincial Championships

This is the 2022 Alberta Senior AA Playoffs tournament. The Fort Saskatchewan Chiefs were announced as the host for the 2021 event in Early December of 2019.[1] Hockey Alberta announced on January 7, 2021 that all of the provincial championships under its' jurisdiction were cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.[2] By the time of the announcement 3 of the 4 leagues that had usually participated in the tournament had already cancelled their seasons and the fourth was on a week by week cancellation basis. The team would be named host for the 2022 event.

Notes[]

  • The North Peace Hockey League champion or the furthest advancing Alberta-based team is eligible to advance to the tournament. The eligible team has declined to participate in the event each year over the past several years and the league cancelled its' 2021-22 season.
  • On March 28th, Hockey Alberta announced that since the Ranchland Hockey League did not follow HA's direction about reinstating the Innisfail Eagles for the league playoffs, HA informed the league that the Nanton Palominos are required to play the Innisfail Eagles to determine who is going to the Alberta Senior AA Provincials. The series will have to be completed by April 3rd. It is not known at this time, how many games the series will be (best of 3 or best of 5). If the series does not play out, the RHL will declared ineligible for the Provincial Championship. On April 1st Hockey Alberta ruled that any member of the Ranchland Senior Hockey League would be ineligible for the 2022 Alberta Senior AA playoffs.
  • As a result of the suspension of the RHL, Hockey Alberta reached out to the Dewberry Mustangs, who were finalist in the SaskAlta League and they declined due to lack of available players. The other finalist in the North Central League was then invited to participate, the Lacombe Generals who accepted.
  • The only other league in the province, the East Central Senior Hockey League, which is a Senior A level league, has not had any teams participate in the event in its history.
