Western Hockey League

This is the 2021-22 Western Hockey League season. This is the league's 56th season dating back to its' founding as the Canadian Major Junior Hockey League in 1966 and subsequent renaming to the Western Canada Hockey League in 1968 and to the present name in 1978.

  • None

Season information[]

  • Regular season opens October 1st
  • Each team plays 68 games
  • Regular season ends April 3rd
  • There will be no interlocking schedule between the two conferences for the season.
  • Playoffs begin April 8th and be completed by May 30th.
  • All playoff series are best-of-seven, teams are re-seeded after the first round
  • Top teams in each division will be seeded 1 and 2 using a conference based playoff reverting to a format last used in 2014.

2022 Ed Chynoweth Cup Playoffs[]

Format[]

The league is divided up into 2 conferences with 2 divisions each. The Eastern Conference is made up of the 6-team East Division and the 6-team Central Division while the Western Conference is made up of the 5-team BC and 5-team US Divisions. The league reverted to the conference based format last used in 2014 when the top 8 teams in each conference qualify for the playoffs. The division winners are seeded 1 or 2 based on record. The remaining teams are seeded 3 through 8. Teams are matched up 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, and 4 vs 5. Teams are reseeded after the first round 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3. The conference semifinal winners meet in the conference final and the conference final winners meet in the league final.

The winner of the Chynoweth Cup advances to the 2022 Memorial Cup being hosted by the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League at TD Station in Saint John, New Brunswick hosted by the Saint John Sea Dogs from June 20–27, 2022.
