This is a list of 2019-20 Canadian junior hockey seasons by league.

Major Junior[]

Pausing of Season[]

The Canadian Hockey League and its' three member leagues announced the following on March 12th:

"The Canadian Hockey League and its three regional leagues, the Ontario Hockey League, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, and Western Hockey League, take the health and safety of our players, fans, volunteers, staff, and general public very seriously. CHL President Dan MacKenzie with Commissioners David Branch, Gilles Courteau, and Ron Robison have been monitoring the situation in regards to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) including what local, provincial, and federal health agencies have recommended. Following consultation with medical professionals and meetings today among the CHL Executive Council, and regional league Board of Governors, the CHL announces that the balance of the 2019-20 season and all hockey activity shall be paused immediately until further notice."[1]

Cancelling of Memorial Cup[]

The balance of play at the major junior level would be cancelled on March 23rd.[2] This would include the three CHL leagues playoffs and the 2020 Memorial Cup.

Junior A[]

The Canadian Junior Hockey League announced that an effort to focus on development of players has resulted in the CJHL reducing the number of 20-year olds playing in the leagues. Starting with 2018-19 the number of 20-year olds will be reduced by one with the maximum allowed being six by the start of the 2020-21 season. The teams can sign additional 20-year olds as affiliate players but the teams can not have the number of 20-year olds exceed the total number allowable for the season.[3]

On September 17, 2019 Hockey Canada announced that the National Junior A Championship would revert to its original name of the Centennial Cup as the event celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2020.[4]

Suspending of Play[]

The Canadian Junior Hockey League announced Thursday that effective Friday, March 13, all games and hockey-related activity involving its member clubs have been cancelled, until further notice, due to the continued threat of the global COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic as well as potential exposure and contamination of its players, team staff members, on and off-ice officials, volunteers and fans.[5]

The Rivers Junior A Hockey League and the Richelieu Valley Junior A Hockey League had reunited for 2018-19 after playing as separate leagues since the 2015-16 season. They played as the Richelieu Valley Junior A Hockey League for the 2018-19 season and then separate again for the 2019-20 season.


Junior D[]

The Orford-Saint-Francois Junior B Hockey League returns after not playing in 2018-19.

The Rivers Junior B Hockey League and the Richelieu Valley Junior B Hockey League reunited for 2018-19 after playing as separate leagues since the 2015-16 season. The league continued as the Richelieu Valley Junior B Hockey League for 2018-19. The leagues would again play separate for 2019-20.

The Baldy Northcott Trophy (Manitoba Junior B championship) is traditionally contested for when there is more than one Junior B league in the province. But it was not awarded for 2019 as the two leagues involved had split and it was far from amicable and legal issues remain to be resolved.
