Outside of the higher and collegiate/university levels it is hard to find events leagues and teams. If I am missing anything please let me know. This is a list of leagues and events involving women's hockey in North America at various levels for the 2018-19 season.
New Leagues[]
- In March of 2018 the Ottawa Women's Junior Hockey League was announced with a planned start for the fall of 2018. The league later pushed back its start until the fall of 2019.
- On August 3, 2018 Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador announced the formation of the Eastern Women's Hockey League for women 17 to 25 years old. The league will be based out of the Fieldian Gardens in St. John's. The plan is to have four teams play games on Friday nights in doubleheaders throughout the season. The league is being organized with the help of the St. John's Junior Hockey League and is the first attempt at a female hockey league in the province.
Folding Leagues[]
On March 31, 2019 the Canadian Women's Hockey League announced it would cease operations as of May 13, 2019 after stating the current operating model for the league is not working. The National Women's Hockey League expressed an interest to possibly add teams from the Greater Toronto Area and Montreal for the 2019-20 season.
Professional[]
Interim Commissioner of the Canadian Women's Hockey League, Jayna Hefford, has expressed an interest in merging the CWHL and the NWHL to form one premier league for North America. Several financial issues involving league structure appear to be the major obstacle in the way as the CWHL is a non-profit league.[1]
