This is the 2016-17 Canadian Premier Junior Hockey League season. This is the league's first season.
The league was announced as starting play for the 2016-17 playing season under the sanction of the Amateur Athletic Union's United Hockey Union which was announced on June 6, 2016.
The league announced plans for a showcase event to be held December 13-15, 2016 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The
On September 16, 2016 the CPJHL issued a press release stating that the Akwesasne Chiefs and Coldwater Falcons operations were ceased by the league. The reason cited was that neither team had not recruited weel enough to put a competitive team on the ice that would not jeopardize the quality of play or the safety of the players.
The operations of the Burk's Falls Bruins was suspended by the league in late September 2016.
During March 2017, the league announced an expansion team based out of the Coldwater & District Community Centre in Coldwater, Ontario that will be known as the Coldwater Ice Wolves The Norwood Nemesis announced they were moving to Cobourg, Ontario and being renamed the Cobourg Galaxy. The team is scheduled to be based out of the Cobourg Community Centre. The league also revoked the membership of the Almonte Jr. Sharpshooters and the O-town Rebels for unspecified reasons.

Playoffs[]
Format[]
All eight teams qualify for the playoffs. The teams are seeded one through eight with 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, 4 vs 5 paired off in the two game total goal quarterfinals. If the teams are tied after the end of the second game a five minute sudden death overtime followed by a shootout if needed will be used to break the tie. The second round will be a round robin with the top two teams advancing to the championship game.
