The 2001-02 NCHL season started with five teams as Fox Creek was re-admitted after taking a year leave of absence. Slave Lake had the best team that year, only losing 2 of their 16 games. They defeated Whitecourt in the league semi finals while Hinton defeated Edson in the other semi final series. For the third time in six seasons, Hinton and Slave Lake met in the league finals with Slave Lake coming out on top for their second league championship.
The NCHL all-star game was played in Whitecourt.
