This was the 2000-01 Western Professional Hockey League season. This was the league's last season prior to a merger with the Central Hockey League under the CHL name.
Franchise changes[]
- The Shreveport Mudbugs were renamed the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs when they moved into the newly built CenturyTel Center in nearby Bossier City, Louisiana
- The Arkansas GlacierCats were forced to fold when the Arkansas RiverBlades of the ECHL moved into the new built Alltel Arena in nearby North Little Rock, Arkansas.

Merger with the Central Hockey League[]
The Amarillo Rattlers, Austin Ice Bats, Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs, Corpus Christi IceRays, El Paso Buzzards, Fort Worth Brahmas, Lubbock Cotton Kings New Mexico Scorpions, Odessa Jackalopes, and San Angelo Outlaws all joined the CHL.
The Central Texas Stampede, Lake Charles Ice Pirates, Monroe Moccasins and Tupelo T-Rex all folded during the merger.
