The 1986 NHL Entry Draft was held on 21 June, at the Montreal Forum in Montreal, Quebec.

Misc.[]

Tom Quinlan who was drafted 79th overall by the Calgary Flames was also drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 1986 Major League Baseball draft. He would sign with the Blue Jays prior to starting school at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities where he was planning on playing both hockey and baseball. The Blue Jays made him several offers prior to him starting school; as the Blue Jays would have lost his rights if he started attending classes. He would end up being a member of the 1992 World Series champion Blue Jays team.
