The 1977–78 New York Rangers season was the fifty-second season for the team in the National Hockey League (NHL). The Rangers finished 5th in the Patrick Division and lost in the Preliminary round to the Buffalo Sabres 2 games to 1.

The Rangers hired Jean-Guy Talbot as their new head coach. It would be his only season as head coach of the Rangers.
