The 8-4 Sherbrooke Castors' victory over the Nelson Maple Leafs Friday night brought the Allan Cup back to Quebec province after an absence of 18 years.
Bobby Kromm, coach of the vanquished Leafs, said the Castors were "without a doubt worthy champions of Canada" and added that Sherbrooke was the best-balanced team his western squad had met all season.
The Friday night win, before 4,100 spectators, was the fourth in a row for the Sherbrooke team, in their best-of-seven Allan Cup play-off. The Castors downed the Leafs 7-3 in the opener, 4-1 in the second game and then steamrolled the hapless Leafs 9-2 in the third.
The Allan Cup, emblematic of the Canadian senior amateur hockey championship, was presented to Castor captain Rene Pepin by Lionel Fleury, President of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association, immediately after the game. In making the presentation, Mr. Fleury told the Sherbrooke squad that because of their clear-cut victory they had "a good chance" of being sent to Europe to compete there during the next hockey season (they did - see 1965-66 Sherbrooke Castors). The last time a Quebec province team won the Allan Cup was in 1946-47, when it went to the Montreal Royals.
Although Nelson played its strongest game of the series against the eastern club Saturday night, the Leafs were foiled time and again by the steady goaltending of Serge Aubry. The western team, badly outshot in the first three games, did better in their final game, making 40 shots-on-goal, compared to Sherbrooke's 42. A sterling performance by Nelson goalie Jim Letcher prevented Sherbrooke from running waay with the game. Letcher stopped Simon Nolet on three breakaways and turned aside a total of 34 shots.
The last game was generally cleanly played, as the case throughout most of the series. However, there was one last-period alteration which resulted in a Nelson player being banished from the game. At the 18-second mark of the third period, Leaf goalie Letcher got a minor penalty for having thrown the puck into the crowd. Kromm did not like the call and said so. He was sent to the penalty box for his comments.
