Summary of 1st game
The league's first game was played on October 8, 1959, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The Montreal Royals and Sault Ste. Marie Thunderbirds played to a 3-3 tie brfore 2730 fans.
Montreal's Bill Sutherland scored the first goal while Thunderbirds' Matt Ravlich earned the first penalty. Future Vezina Trophy winners Charlie Hodge and Denis DeJordy played in nets.
