Macs Capture Allan Cup
(Kelowna)--A group of hardskating, hardshooting hustlers from Bellville, Ontario, Thursday broke loose for five goals in the third period to blast Kelowna Packers' Allan Cup hopes with an 8-5 victory.
Trailing 4-3 heading into the final period, Belleville McFarlands needed only 35 seconds to tie it up. Russ Kowalchuk scored twice in six minutes, and that, to all intents and purposes, was that.
Belleville won by coming from behind a 3-1 deficit in the final game of the best-of-seven series. Belleville travelled more than 30 minutes before scoring their first goal of the game, but by the end of the second period, they trailed only 4-3.
It was a victory by a great--and injury free--club over a great--but injury riddled--club and no doubt arguments will rage throughout the off-season that the Packers would have won the senior hockey championship of Canada if they had been able to use all their players throughout the series.
There can be no excuses, however, and the Packers offered none. They were beaten four games to three and it will read that way into infinity no matter what individual players may think.
Kowalchuk, a utility player throughout the season, scored three times for the champs, with MInnie Menard and playing-coach Ike Hildebrand picking up two each. Barton Bradley, former Seattle American, scored once, the one that tied the game after less than a minute in the third period.
Jim Moro, George Agar, Brian Roche, Mike Durban and Moe Young counted for Kelowna, which advanced from the Okanagan Senior Hockey League past the Rossland Warriors of the Western International Hockey League and the makeshift Winnipeg Maroons, en route to the final.
