Off-season[]
Regular Season[]
On December 14, 1933, Detroit's goalie John Ross Roach was injured near the end of the second period of the Red Wings game versus the Chicago Black Hawks. Defenseman Doug Young filled in for the rest of the game and only allowed one goal but the Red Wings lost 4-0.
Roach returned to the line-up several games later but struggled. After three losses to end 1933, the Red Wings obtained Wilf Cude on loan from the Montreal Canadiens and Roach was demoted to the minors. Cude played excellently, with a 15-6-8 record which included a 13 game unbeaten streak, and led the Red Wings to first place in the American Division and the team's first Prince of Wales Trophy.
Burr Williams played his first NHL game on March 8, 1934 in the Red Wings 3-0 win over the Chicago Black Hawks. He went on to play the last three games of the regular season and seven in the playoffs.
