The 1931–32 Montreal Maroons season was the 8th season of the Maroons franchise in the National Hockey League (NHL). The Maroons finished 3rd in the Canadian Division and lost in the Semi-finals to the Toronto Maple Leafs 4 goals to 3.
Off-season [ ]
After turning over half the line-up the season before, the Maroons made no trades or purchases. The only significant change to the roster was that goalie Normie Smith beat out Dave Kerr for the back-up spot.
Regular Season [ ]
Hooley Smith sports the 1931 pattern jersey.
The Maroons jerseys were modified from the multiple, thin "barber pole" stripes on the arms and body to a thick white stripe outlined with a thin maroon and white stripe. This design would remain for the rest of the franchise's existence with a minor modification to the font of the "M" on the jersey front for the 1935-36 season .
Rookie goalie Normie Smith played his first NHL game during the Maroons season opener on November 14, 1931, beating the Boston Bruins 4-1. He played every game in November but had a rough go, with a 2-4-1 record. Smith continued to play ever game until he was hurt with three minutes left in the 5-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on January 2, 1932. Defenseman Harold Starr played the rest of the game and Flat Walsh was recalled from the minors. The Maroons were in last place in the Canadian Division when Smith was knocked out but Walsh went 14-10-3 and led them into the post season.
The Maroons were an offensive machine this season and finished second in the league in goals scored. Dave Trottier , Hooley Smith and Babe Siebert finished 6, 7, and 8th in league scoring with Trottier finishing 4th in goals. Hooley Smith was named a Second Team All-Star.
