The 1929–30 Pittsburgh Pirates (NHL) season was the franchise's last season in Pittsburgh, moving in 1930 to Philadelphia. The Pirates had an extremely poor season, winning only five of 44 games to finish last in the American Division, missing the playoffs. It would be the last NHL game in Pittsburgh until 1967.

Pre-season[edit | edit source]

The Pirates suffered injuries to several players in training camp including Harold Darragh fracturing a rib and Gerry Lowrey spraining his ankle.

Regular Season[edit | edit source]

The November 19, 1929 game against the Toronto Maple Leafs was a wild scoring affair in which two defensemen scored 4 goals, the Pirates John McKinnon and the Leafs Hap Day. Hib Milks of the Pirates also had a hat trick as Pittsburgh triumphed 10-5.

Herb Drury suffered a broken hand during the 5-3 loss on November 23, 1929 to the New York Rangers and missed 17 games. Frank Fredrickson performed three roles on the team (manager, coach and centreman) and had an excellent start to the season, scoring 11 points in the first 9 games. However, his knee was injured in the December 12, 1929 game against the Boston Bruins and his missed the rest of the season.
